Don was born in
Banff, Alberta and has always been in awe of the mountains, the open prairies
and the rugged unspoilt beauty of Canada's north country, having lived and travelled
extensively in all these regions. 24 years as an officer with the RCAF
allowed him exposure to provinces west of New Brusnswick as well as Europe with
the opportunity to absorb the culture, landscape and art of these areas.
Don's art training
included studies with many prominent Canadian artists as Arthur Lismer and Adam
Sherriff Scott, RCA, and formal art education in extension courses in many universities.
Don has participated
in many shows with the Independent Art Association, Montreal, Barrie Art Club,
Edmonton Art Club, Federation of Canadian Artists, Edm Chapter, Society of Western
Canadian Artists and the Artists Borealis. He has had one person shows in Edmonton,
Stony Plain Mulitcultural Centre, and Athabasca University. Don's work is represented
in the Alberta Art Foundation Collection, and in many corporate and private
collections in Canada, Australia, China, Japan, England, France and Germany.
He has taught oil painting for over 25 years, was president and co founder of
Rocky Mountain Painting Experience, an outdoor workshop. He is the past president
of the Edmonton Chapter of the ederation of Canadian Artists, and is now a signature
member of the Society of Western Canadian Artists and is a founding member of
the Artists Boreallis Group.
Don's subject matter
covers the spectrum from landscapes to seascapes. He works on location wherever
posible in order to capture the mood and atmosphere of landscapes in a free
and spontaneous manner. His facination with wide open vistas, big sky of the
prairies, isolation of the north and ever changing glory of the mountains is
readily apparent in his somewhat immpressionistic and spontaneous technique.
